2011 Cricket World Cup Final

2 Apr 2011

Only the lucky got to watch the world cup final live at the Wankhede and the experience of India winning will remain etched in memory forever. However, the attendance increasingly became about who was or wasn't going to be there and celebrities whose day would not have been complete if they were not shown on the big screen watching the game from their privileged stands. As for the lesser privileged, they waited until the stands emptied and the lights were shutting down - in one synchronised move broken open the main gates, ran inside the ground aimlessly in truimphant joy, rolled their bodies in the grass, kissed the turf and then played a few imaginary shots, took pictures with poses of holding the trophy at the spot where Dhoni held it - their little party of pure unadulterated joy reminded me that nothing was greater than the game itself.

Garba in Jambur

Dec 2011

The Sidis of Jambur, a village deep in the Gir forest, are African settlers in India who were originally sold as slave soldiers for Indian princely states. They know nothing of their origin as descendants of African slaves and the 50,000 odd population speak Gujarati. The Sidis are the lost tribe of Africa, and they are also struggling within the margins of Indian society. But for now, the only remnant they retain of their African lineage is their music and dance.
